Maclaren Recalls Strollers Because of Child Finger Amputations
When you have a baby, the last thing you want to think about is whether the stroller you purchased is safe – especially whether or not your Maclaren stroller will injure or even cut off your child’s finger. Like most parents, hearing your child’s first words or seeing their first step is what is imagined and lived for. Purchasing all the necessities should be fun and exciting, not dangerous for unsuspecting and gaga-eyed parent. The following information is what the news and other organizations have reported about the Maclaren stroller from the years 1999 to 2009.
Maclaren has recently recalled 1 million strollers purchased between 1999 and 2009 in the U.S. because of reports of finger amputations of children placed in the stroller. This recall includes all nine models of Maclaren’s double and single umbrella strollers: Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, Techno XLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno, and Easy Traveller. These models have been sold at retailers nationwide such as Babies “R” Us and Target.
The South Norwalk, Conn.-based company announced the voluntary recall in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The firm has received 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller’s hinge mechanism, resulting in 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the dangerous side joints of the model is the cause of these injuries, with danger occurring when users open up the umbrella strollers and children get their fingers in the hinges. As a remedy, Maclaren is offering free hinge covers to better protect children. Owners of these strollers are to contact the company to receive a free repair kit.
